Channel 4’s latest Dispatches episode ‘£2 Million Passport – Welcome to Britain’ investigated the failings of the UK immigration system’s golden visa, which allows foreign nationals to invest £2m in exchange for British citizenship. Undercover reporters discovered the sparse due diligence performed on prospective investors, despite admissions that their wealth stemmed from an association with Putin or the supply of Chinese weaponry.
It was revealed that the Home Office relied on this due diligence, undertaken by private immigration or wealth management firms on behalf of wealthy clients, to vet prospective visa applicants. Jonathan Fisher QC was asked for his opinion as one of Britain’s leading financial crime experts and he said the Home Office’s practice seems
“out of line with the general approach in the anti-money laundering regime… the regime is at pains to make the point that the due diligence requirements are solely with you.”
